Meta faces $17.1B over alleged harms to children
Imran Ahmed, CEO and founder of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) released a statement reacting to the $17.1 billion settlement between 51 AGs and Meta over social media addiction claims.
The risks children face online are changing fast.
Children are growing up with digital tools that weren’t designed with their safety as a priority.
This year alone, CCDH researchers have exposed AI tools sexualizing images of children, YouTube recommending severe eating disorder content, and chatbots assisting with requests to plan school shootings.
We put technology safeguards to the test
CCDH researchers tested popular AI chatbots to see how they responded when young users sought dangerous information.
Our Killer Apps investigation found that 8 in 10 chatbots regularly assisted with requests related to planned violent attacks.
Our research brings these safety failures into the open and gives policymakers and the public evidence to demand better.
Fewer harmful recommendations
What change can look like
In 2024, CCDH found that 1 in 3 videos recommended to our simulated 13-year-old YouTube account contained harmful eating disorder content. Two years later, after new child-safety obligations took effect in the UK and EU, we tested YouTube again. Harmful recommendations had fallen to 1 in 9. That means fewer harmful recommendations reaching children.
